The ultra consistent Magic Day finally got her turn when staying on best close home to win the SIS, Supporting Irish Racing Mares Handicap Hurdle at Kilbeggan.
Runner-up on her only point-to-point start, the six-year-old Doyen mare had finished no worse than fourth in four previous runs over hurdles.
Stepping up in trip for the first time on handicap debut, the Henry De Bromhead trained mare was always prominent under Darragh O'Keeffe.
Pushed along to challenge leader Bayou Belle after the penultimate flight, the pair settled down to battle it out from the back of the last.
Nothing separated the two with less than 50 yards to race but Magic Day just edged ahead close home to prevail by half-a-length.
Darragh O’Keeffe said: “The last day we were a bit unlucky as we missed the first and were put in a bit of a pocket and had to sit and suffer.
“There was a good pace on today and the step up in trip suited her. She got the job done and with the rain, the ground is probably as soft as she’d want it. I’d say she’d be better on nicer ground.
“She’ll go jumping fences at some stage
